I always re-use the pinion shim that came off it factory unless the gears are marked +10 or some other number, then add or subtract shims, otherwise leave that stock. I don't know if there is a spec on these for axle end play, but some in/out movement (1/4 inch or so) is normal for a semi floating axle like the GM 10 bolt. The major cause for concern is if there has been some wear on the C-clip that holds the axle in place causing the C-clip to be too thin.
